Bouncy Balls and Baby Bear

Posted by Katie Posted on Jul - 24 - 2011

My dear friend Sandy is expecting her second baby boy, so I threw her a shower at Chili’s.  The first item on the agenda: finding an invite inspiring cuteness and cupcakes!  As soon as I saw this image, I was hooked:

And hence you have the inspiration behind this cupcake creation!  I found the mini Radio Flyer wagon online and couldn’t wait to fill it up with sports balls and a fuzzy bear.  The theme of baby Austin’s room is sports galore, so I stayed with just the sports balls and didn’t bother to replicate other toys.  For each ball I started with molded Rice Krispie treats, covered them with icing, rolled them in non-pareils/sprinkles, and then piped the details.  The bear is made from Wilton’s bear cake pan.  I pretty much followed the directions step-by-step, using a grass tip to get the fuzzy look.  I cut out a base custom to the bear’s bottom, so I could place it on the corner of the wagon.  For support I placed a small Pyrex dish upside down in the wagon to support his middle.  The baseball bat is made out of Rice Krispie treats dipped in peanut butter chocolate.  I wrapped Pull n’ Peel Twizzlers around the base for a handle and used toothpicks to secure it to the bear.

The stars are made of chocolate from a mold and were propped up against large marshmallows.  The cupcakes for “Go Austin” were baked in turquoise blue wrappers with a plan to set them on top of a baby blue blanket, but when I put it all together the colors didn’t jive.  Plus the dark blue stars totally didn’t go with the turquoise, but I loved how they matched the rugged red and brown theme with the wagon and bear – it better matched the light brown feel of the invitation.  I had some dark blue cupcake liners to set them in, but I knew there would be a gap that was going to bother me.  I decided to try shoving the light brown krinkle paper in the front “pocket” and was so pleased with the final look.  I thought it turned out way better, and now I have a new technique for jazzing up my cupcakes!  Good thing I prayed for creativity that morning :) .

All in all we had a fabulous time, and wouldn’t you know the first thing to go was the bear’s ear?  There’s just something about a cute and cuddly bear that makes you want to eat him!
